Indian passport processing times by consulate and city

How long Indian passport renewal takes at each mission and outsourced centre, with the fee and how to book. A cell says “Not published” when the official pages we could open give no figure; we never fill the gap with an estimate.

How to read these times

• These are times published by the Indian missions or their outsourced providers. They are estimates, usually counted from the day the mission receives your application, and they leave out postal and courier time.
• A police verification in India that is not clear can add weeks, whichever mission you use.

Canada: by city and mission

BLS International takes the applications in every Canadian city below. Its pages publish one time per mission, not one per city, so every city under a mission shows that mission’s figure.

Consulate General of India, Toronto

• Serves: Ontario (except postal codes starting with K), Quebec (except postal codes starting with J, H or K), Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
• The time counts from the day the Consulate receives the application, so postal delays and courier time back to you are extra. Applications sent by post take 3 to 4 working days longer.
• The page says the time can also depend on the city you apply in and where your old passport was issued, but it gives one figure for the whole jurisdiction, not one per city.

High Commission of India, Ottawa

• Serves: The Ottawa-Hull capital region, Ontario postal codes starting with K, Montreal and Quebec postal codes starting with J or H, Kingston, Cornwall, Hawkesbury, Arnprior, Renfrew, Perth, Prescott, Brockville, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls and Morrisburg in Ontario, and Nunavut.
• BLS describes the 8 weeks as the minimum, and says time counts from arrival at the High Commission, with postal applications taking 3 to 4 working days longer.

Consulate General of India, Vancouver

• Serves: Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
• The BLS centres in this jurisdiction do not take Tatkal or 60-page (jumbo) applications; BLS tells you to contact the Consulate directly. The Consulate’s fee schedule lists a Tatkal fee but no Tatkal time.
• The Consulate says the time depends on a clear police verification report from India.

How to apply and book

• Fill in the application on the Passport Seva portal, print it, and take it with your documents to a BLS centre. BLS is the Consulate’s outsourced provider and also takes postal applications.
• You can renew up to a year before expiry, and the Consulate expects you to renew at least 6 months before it runs out. A late renewal is not treated as an emergency.
• The Consulate counts only the death or critical illness of a parent, child or sibling as an emergency, and an emergency does not make the passport come faster. Travel plans and visa or permit applications do not count.
• BLS says the Passport Seva portal was upgraded and that applications and appointments may take longer than usual while it settles.

United States: by mission

Embassy of India, Washington, DC

• Serves: Bermuda, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
• The Embassy also posted a notice of revised passport fees from 1 July 2026, as an image we could not read, so the fee table on its passport page is what is shown.
• Police verification in India can take up to 2 weeks once the Embassy starts it.

Consulate General of India, Atlanta

• Serves: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and the Virgin Islands.
• The Consulate’s passport page appears twice with different Tatkaal times and fees, so no Tatkaal figure or fee is taken from it. Ask the Consulate which is current.
• Not published: No VFS centre city is named on the page we read.

Consulate General of India, Boston

• Serves: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
• Until the Boston office is fully set up, the Consulate General in New York handles passport, visa and OCI applications for these states. They are submitted at VFS Boston.
• Not published: The Boston page gives no processing time or fee for passports.

Consulate General of India, Chicago

• Serves: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.
• Tatkaal is not available for lost or damaged passports, short-validity passports, major name changes, or changes of sex, date or place of birth, appearance, signature or parents’ names.
• Not published: The Tatkaal notice gives no normal processing time, and the passport page we read gave none either.

Consulate General of India, Houston

• Serves: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
• The FAQ says the time is longer if police verification is not clear, not counting VFS time.
• Not published: The pages we read do not name a VFS centre city or give a fee.

Consulate General of India, Los Angeles

• Serves: Southern California (Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Imperial, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Kern and San Luis Obispo counties), Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.
• Not published: The Consulate’s website refused automated access (error 403), so its passport pages could not be read.

Consulate General of India, New York

• Serves: Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Delaware, and for now passport applications from the Boston states too.
• Not published: The Consulate’s current passport pages did not show readable text. The only FAQ we could read names a former provider and is out of date, so it is not used.

Consulate General of India, San Francisco

• Serves: Northern and Central California, Colorado, Hawaii, Utah, Wyoming and Guam.
• VFS adds a US$19 service fee and a US$2 contribution to the community welfare fund on top of the government fee. The pages we read do not show the government fee.

Consulate General of India, Seattle

• Serves: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oregon and Washington.
• If VFS finds a document missing it emails you, and you must send it within 21 business days or the application is rejected.
• Not published: The page we read gives no fee.

How to apply and book

• VFS Global is the only authorised provider for the Embassy and the Consulates General in the United States. You apply online on the Passport Seva portal, then submit the printout and documents to VFS in person or by post or courier.
• You choose your consulate when you create your Passport Seva account, and cannot change it later in the same account, so check the jurisdiction first.
• If police verification in India is not clear, a passport can take about 30 days or more on top of the normal time, not counting VFS time.

United Kingdom: by mission

High Commission of India, London

• Serves: London and the south of England, the Cardiff area of Wales, and any area of the UK not covered by the other missions.
• Not published: The High Commission’s website shows a security check to automated readers, so its passport pages could not be read.

Consulate General of India, Birmingham

• Serves: The Midlands and parts of the North, including the West Midlands and Nottinghamshire. Birmingham’s own page lists a different set of counties from the Edinburgh mission’s table.
• The times start once the Consulate has received and accepted the application, and can be longer in peak travel seasons or if more documents are needed.
• Not published: The pages we read do not name a VFS centre city for Birmingham.

Consulate General of India, Edinburgh

• Serves: Scotland.
• Not published: The Consulate’s passport page gives no time or fee and sends you to VFS Global.

Consulate General of India, Manchester

• Serves: The Manchester boroughs of Greater Manchester.
• Not published: The Edinburgh mission’s jurisdiction table lists this Consulate, but we found no passport page of its own that we could read.

Consulate General of India, Belfast

• Serves: Northern Ireland.
• Not published: The Edinburgh mission’s jurisdiction table lists this Consulate, but we found no passport page of its own that we could read.

How to apply and book

• Fill in the application on the Passport Seva portal. Every applicant, including children, then hands the printout in person at a VFS Global centre with an appointment.
• Appointments for the outsourced services across the whole UK are booked on the High Commission of India, London website.
• For Tatkaal, an adult needs 3 valid Indian identity documents. It is not available if the passport expired more than 3 years ago or you have no valid visa.
