What to know
- You can apply up to a year before expiry, and Indian missions expect you to renew at least 6 months before it runs out.
- From Canada you apply online, then submit your documents at a BLS centre; from the US it goes through VFS Global.
- Missions don’t treat a late renewal as an emergency, and a pending police check can add weeks, so start early.
- Many countries want 6 months left on a passport, which is another reason to start around 9 months before expiry.
If it has already expired
You can still apply for a re-issue after it expires, but if it expired more than 3 years ago a fresh police check is needed and it takes longer.
